Charity Project Links- Alam Asia Fund

Traveling in Asia, the heart is often touched with a desire to help and to give back to the places that have welcomed us.

The Alam Asia Fund was established to help contributions reach people and projects directly, knowing a small contribution can make an enormous difference in Asia.
The continued focus is to identify and help support existing, well managed grass roots projects emphasizing education, environment and health care needs.

Half the population in Southeast Asian developing countries is under 21 years of age and much of the population lives on less than one dollar a day. Helping to create useful skills and opportunity, dedicated and motivated individuals can be empowered to find a sustainable future within their own culture.

Below are links to charity projects very worthy to support:

Laos:
The Language Project @ My Library
In 1999, American Carol Kresge began setting up reading and listening libraries for the novices and monks in Luang Prabang temples. Since 2003, a self study and resource centre has been operating in town open and free to all. English language books, tapes and CD Rom learning materials are carefully chosen to meet the need for further studies and skills. Computer programs include Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Photoshop and a CD Rom Encyclopedia. Learning to type materials are available in English as well as Lao. Books on Art, History and Folk Stories of Laos are very popular and there is a range of Hmong language books which the ethnic Hmong users are amazed to find. Most of these learning materials are simply not available in Laos.
Being the largest town in Northern Laos, several thousand post secondary students come to attend school in Luang Prabang. The Language Project library averages 140 users a day. It's a place where young people come to help each other, learn about problem solving and where students realize that they too, can become teachers. Education in the English language is a key to a job and new future. English is also the language of trade, commerce and international relations even among non English speaking Asean -Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

The Language Project also supports a library at Santipap High School in Luang Prabang, the Novices High School in Sayabuli province and several mini libraries in remoter provinces.

Orangutans are critically endangered.

Habitat loss and poaching continue to push orangutans to extinction.
Each day an area of six football fields of forest disappears- much of it to create palm oil plantations. Not only are these peaceful orangutans at risk, but entire ecosystems of flora and wildlife.
